Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability
Bodily-Injury and Property Liability covers a wide range of possible expenses including medical treatment, rehabilitation, funeral costs incurred by your own passengers, other drivers, their passengers, even injured pedestrians, lawyers' fees and non-monetary losses related to pain and suffering, up to the limit you select.
If your limits are 150/300/100, this means:
• No more than $150,000 will be paid per person for Bodily Injury
• No more than $300,000 will be paid per accident for Bodily Injury
• No more than $100,000 will be paid per accident for Property Damage
Example: You are at fault for an auto accident that injures three other people and damages their vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle’s medical bills are $70,000 and the medical bills for the remaining two passengers of the other vehicle were $90,000 each. The damage to the other vehicle was $30,000. In this case, all of the injuries and damages would be covered because they are within the Liability limits you selected. Each individuals injuries were less than $150,000, and the total amount for all injuries sustained because of the accident were less than $300,000. The other vehicle's damage was below the $100,000 Property Damage Liability limit, so everything would be covered.
On the other hand, medical bills for serious accidents can add up very quickly and if they exceed the coverage limits either per person or per accident then the full liability for the remaining expenses would be on the individual at fault.
We think it's important to consider purchasing additional liability limits and an umbrella policy when it is possible financially. It is very easy for a person to be involved in an accident that makes them liable for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
