Protecting Your Lake of the Ozarks Home While You Are Away

Vacations are meant to be a stress free event, but you may be worried about leaving your Lake of the Ozarks home empty while you are away. Although statistics show that property crime in 2012 was lower than the US average in Lake Ozark, it’s still a good idea to protect your home while you are away.

Home security

A good home security system can be a deterrent in and of itself, especially if you post notifications that the property is being monitored. Any alarm that makes noise is better than no alarm, so even if you can’t afford a top of the range system, it’s worth installing something to draw attention to would-be intruders.

Deadbolts are also a good deterrent, as they are harder to pick than traditional locks and would put the robber at a greater risk of being seen while trying to break in. Whichever type of lock you choose, always be sure to lock all doors and windows when you leave your home. The goal is to make your house as difficult a target as possible for any burglar, so they will pass your house up when looking for an opportunity to commit their crime.

If your home doesn’t look empty, it won’t be a first choice for many burglars. Interior lights on timers in various rooms give the appearance that someone is at home, as do timers on your television or radio. Noise and light can fool some burglars into thinking that there is someone home, and could prevent a break-in. However, a ringing telephone that goes unanswered is a sign that the home is empty, so it’s a good idea to switch the ringer off when you leave.

Outside your home

Good home security doesn’t stop with doors and windows. You need to take a look at the area outside your home to see if you are making it too easy for someone to break in. Overgrown shrubs, trees and bushes could be ideal hiding places for a burglar while he finds a way inside your home. Keep all the greenery trimmed to eliminate the risk.

Security lighting is a good deterrent because it makes it more likely for anyone on your property to be seen at night. Motion sensor lights or those on a timer should be hung high enough so that they can’t be moved or damaged by a burglar.

Letting others know you will be away

Alert your neighbors that you will be gone, so they will be able to keep an eye on any unusual activity around your house. They may not be concerned if motion sensor lights go off usually, but they will be more likely to take a look outside if they know that you are not at home when the lights are activated. If you can, have a trusted relative or neighbor come around and do a property check while you are away, especially if you are going to be gone more than a few days. This can also catch any other problems that might occur in your home, such as a leak that develops or any other damage to your house.

Arrange for someone to collect your newspaper and mail while you are away. This not only maintains the appearance that you are home, but it also prevents would-be identity thieves from getting access to your mail and anything in it that they could use to commit fraud.

Protection year-round

Using these tips can help keep your home secure all year round, and maintaining an adequate amount of homeowner’s coverage can, too. Keep your peace of mind whether you are home or away and enjoy every minute of living in your Missouri home.
