Do you know someone whose life has been affected by cancer?

If you’re like most people, when you hear the word “cancer” a few familiar faces come to mind. Whether those people are currently battling, beat, or succumbed to cancer, you know the significant impact this vicious disease can have on a person’s life.

Relay for Life is an event that was started as a way to honor the battle cancer victims face. This year, McGrath Insurance Group’s Wendy Wood participated to help raise money and find a cure.

About the Bolivar Relay for Life Event

On Friday, June 5, from 6:00 p.m. to midnight at Bolivar Middle School, 12 teams gathered to walk the track in support and recognition of the battle faced by cancer victims.

Cancer victims don’t rest; neither did these teams as they raised awareness for the American Cancer Society’s cause.

Prior to the event, the 144 registered participants raised $11,509.90 for cancer research, education, and facilities for cancer patients. More money was raised with fundraising activities the night of the event (the exact amount is not known at this time).

During the event, everyone came to a standstill as organizers light candles and remembered those whose lives are affected by cancer.

In a powerful luminaria ceremony, a video presentation was held to honor those who must be remembered (have passed away) and honored (are still living). Once the video was complete, the group once again walked the track to see the decorated luminara bags with cancer victims’ names.

This is a Celebration of Life and For the Future

Throughout the night, there was entertainment from local organizations.

Wendy Wood, a McGrath Insurance Group employee, was there to support her daughter, Maegan. The Center Stage Dance Academy in Bolivar’s dance group performed a series of hip hop and jazz routines as a way to encourage those who were working hard to raise money for this important cause. Maegan is a member of the Center Stage Dance Academy in Bolivar and danced in the “Tear da Roof Off” performance.

This group is also having a second performance at Bolivar High School on Saturday, June 13th at 2 p.m.
